Just got a call from 202-230-0205 telling me they were with the IRS and a lawsuit was filed against me. I hung up and they called right back. I had my daughter call them from a blocked line and asked them who they were and they refused to talk to her and hung up. This is clearly a SCAM because no federal agency would refuse to disclose who they are when you call them. Also the IRS is required by law to send out formal notifications by mail in regards to any possible actions against you.
Actually many people do fall for them. The callers to go after women, single mothers, the elderly and members of hte immigrant community. Now they are going after young students. They are looking for vulnerable people. Anybody they think might not be knowledgeable about how the IRS functions.
For example, many people actually believe that:
1 . IRS makes initial contacts by phone. [false]
2. IRS files lawsuits. . [false]
3. That IRS can call on local law enforcement to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. [false]
4. That having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is a crime. [false]
5. That people are prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. [false]
With so many people believing such stuff, it's no wonder the scammers rake in 20 to 30 million a year.
Everyone ought to educate themselves about these scams.
