Same thing here. Call was a recording saying that it was the IRS. Person that quickly answered was someone from India claiming to be with the IRS. I just laughed. I just realized that my phone says that it is a call from a wireless phone. But when I told him to tell me why he was calling, he wanted my specific information. I just hung up. It was an obvious scam. I am just going to block the number. IRS sends letters.

Received call from this number, with instructions to call back, same as above reports. The first time I called, someone from their office said "The IRS doesn't make phone calls", which seemed odd--so I called back. They wanted me to pay $4200 in back taxes from the time period between 2009-2014. They had Indian accents; I spoke with a woman who "transferred me up" to her supervisor. He said they had sent me a letter (I occasionally miss letters, so I thought it possible that I had indeed missed it), and I was told to go immediately to the bank, take out $4200 or as much as I could as a good faith gesture to the IRS that I intended to pay them, then an officer would come to my home to collect the money. They said I would get the money back, and that it was probably just an error of the person who filed my taxes. They said an officer would be at my doorstop to go over all of the information within the hour, and I needed to go to the bank first. They said there was a warrant out for my arrest due to this. I actually went to the bank (I know, but they were believable!), and the teller told me I had only $1500 in my account. The guy said that would be enough and the rest could be paid through a payment plan. The bank teller then told me that the IRS does not make phone calls. She double-checked with her supervisor, and searched for the number that was calling me, and this thread popped up. She told me to hang up. I did, then he called me back within 2 mins, angry, saying that since I am not making a gesture to work this out, I will be in extra trouble with the IRS. I told him I doubted it. I am embarrassed that I let the scam get to this point, but wanted to share my experience with others. They did not ask for a debit card or anything, they wanted cash. It was difficult to understand them due to it being loud in the room they were calling from. I thought the fact that the first person I spoke with said, "The IRS doesn't make phone calls" made them more legit--why would he blow the whistle on his own scam? The next person I talked to said they were calling because the letter they had already sent hadn't been responded to. When I questioned their legitimacy, their answers seemed legit ("It's probably not your mistake--you'll get the money back," etc), but I am really hoping that my detail here helps someone else out. I thought it odd that I owed that much money (I pay my taxes early each year), but was also scared that if there were legitimacy to it, and I ignored it, I would be in more trouble.
I'm going to try to report this in other places, too.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.  IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government.     Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes.  Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
