Voice recorded message stating that she was from the IRS and that we must return call or face legal action. IRS website states that this scam is going around.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

Scared my mom to death.Called her two separate times on two different days. The first message was a man stating that he was with the IRS and that they were filing a lawsuit against my mom. The next day a "woman" (obviously a recorded message) stated that she was Officer June Smith with the IRS, not to ignore this message. To call back immediately before action was taken. The two phone numbers these people called from were: 518-792-9450 & 202-241-8730. When you call the number back to see who answers, they are always busy. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!!!!! IT IS A SCAM!!! I have reported it on the IRS website.

Happened Here
Received a call from this number on a Saturday telling me that the IRS has three criminal charges against me, because I falsified my taxes. Was extremely rude - would not give me the date, the amount - no legitimate information. They ask for your phone number as soon as you call and your name. Then they get your "file" and then tell you they are going to seize all your assets in your name. When I asked why I haven't received anything in the mail, this man (who btw, left one name on my v/m and gave me another name over the phone) told me that they came out 2 times to my house, but no one was there to sign for the documents. Then I asked what address they came to and they gave me one I've never heard off. I asked them to spell out the name of the street and city - he couldn't. I told him I didn't live there and never have - that's when he tried to get my real address. I did not provide it to him. I told him to hold on and that's when he started yelling at me telling me that within an hour the police will come to my house and arrest me. While I was looking up the number they called from (this is the site I found), he hung up the phone and I haven't heard anything since.

It really does seem like they're trying to scare people into thinking this is the IRS. Complete and total SCAM, do not fall for it and DO NOT GIVE ME THEM YOUR INFORMATION OR ANY FINANCE/CREDIT CARD INFO.

I hope this operation gets shut down very quickly - please spread the word so no one falls for it!
