I found this message on my answering machine today: The timestamp was 10:08AM Friday August 1, 2014.
“ This message.
I need you, or your retained attorney (unclear) is/ to return our call, the issue at hand is extremely time sensitive.
I am office Julie Smith from Internal Revenue Service.
And, the hot-line to my position is (202) 506-9717.
I repeat Its (202) 506-9717.
Don’t disregard this message and do return the call
Before we take any legal allegation against you.
Good by, and take care.”
It sounds like a scam for several reasons:
1. It sounds like a robo call .
2. The way the words are phrased does not sound like they are from someone who’s first language is English.
3. Additionally I wouldn’t expect the IRS to contact anyone this way, and I have no reason to expect the IRS is trying to contact me.
Report the Calls to the real IRS here:
•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.
Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.
