It's real that want your $200, but you will never see $9000 grant. I have received these calls about 10 different times. Just for fun I play along with, but never call back the number they give you. Sometimes those call back numbers switch to call line that charges by the minute you are connected, and yes they have your number you are calling from. BAM you are hit with large bill. The original number they call from is usually unavailable on your phone so you do not know where call originated from. This was SCAM from start.
In In 2 days I received 3 calls with a person with a foreign accent saying: "The U.S. Gov. has chosen you to recieve a $9,000 grant which would not have to be paid back" and all I had to do is confirm my name and address. The call then read me my first and last name and my address. I confirmed it and was told to write down my ID number and Call Back number: 202 670-6142 and was told to call back the "manager" immediate and if it was busy to keep calling until I got through. I did not call back but Googled the number and found this site (http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-202-670-6142) indicating this whole thing is a SCAM. The 3 calls in 2 days came from 3 different numbers: +1 202 780-5831; +1 202 653-5122; +1 202 774-9865 from Washington DC? which are probably all bogus numbers and non numbers from where the calls originated. Caveat emptor! Cavet also who you speak to on your phone!
What can I do to stop these calls without going to the phone company? First, simply hang up on the caller. Do not engage in conversation.
