Called my home number and I missed call. The message that was left by a female recording said, the reason for this call is that the IRS is filing a law suit against you. To get more information about this case file, please immediately call our dept @ 202-684-6848. Thank you.
I also received the phone call telling us that we were being sued by the IRS. I told them I knew this was a scam, and could talk to my lawyer. I just hung up on them.
Fiancee just received a call on her home phone from the same number. Same pre-packaged, scare tactic crap aimed at scamming you out of your money.
Clue #1: The IRS DOES NOT call you to tell you that they are suing you. If it ever gets to that point, they send registered mail that you sign for. However, that is IF AND ONLY IF, you have first endured the IRS audit process and have been found to owe back/additional taxes, and have failed/refused to pay them in the time frame negotiated. The IRS provides ample opportunity (as well as legitimate communication) to allow for any such payments to occur.
So, she called the number back and a guy with a thick [***] accent identified himself as "Office Mark Brown" (Clue #2) and proceeded to give his "official" ID/Badge number with such a horrendous grasp of the English language that he was shredding the English language like Edward Scissorshands trying to pronouncing the letters and numbers of his "Official Badge ID". Apparently, the letter "M" is a tough one. (Clue #3) .
Clue #4: "Officer Brown" also indicated that he was sending a Sheriff's officer out "right now" to serve her the papers and, here's the best part, "arrest you for failure to pay"! So....the IRS calls you BEFORE HAND to tell you that they are sending a police officer out to arrest you? (These idiots are in dire need of a much more convincing talk track).
Bottom line, this is (most likely) a low IQ individual/organization that has procured a Washington, DC based number to 'legitimize' their attempts at scamming you out of your money.
If you are contacted by them, don't waste your time calling them back, it's a 100% hoax.
I also recieved a call this morning. I did call back out of curiosity. They... agent Edward Brown badge #41065.. told me that agent Jackson Browne.. no relation...had left me a yellow piece of paper taped to my door on April 10th at 12:30 EST because I wasn't home. Agent Ed, said I owed an under payment of taxes in the amount of $5680.93 for the years 2008 thru 2013. I told him it took them long enough to decide I had underpaid. Whereupon he said the IRS has 5 years to file and collect and I should just trust them and pay. He also said I had been using outdated tax information...I told him I would mention that to TurboTax. I told him when I saw it in writing I would respond thru my TurboTax attorney. I asked for a copy of my information they were using for the collection and Agent Ed, said they couldn't give me any printed documents because my paperwork was all ready at the court house in DC. So I told them to come and pick me up. We did have a very" colorful" conversation where he informed me that we were being recorded. I told him it would be a good thing to use as a training tape and I'd be looking for a call from either Mick Jagger or Gladys Knight.
We got a call from this number. A computer generated voice told us that we were being sued by the IRS and to call this number. We chose not to call the number. Glad I looked here. Wonder if anyone ever falls for this?
