A good rule of thumb is that if you are sure you are on the no call list, yet get phone calls from an unknown numbers (regardless of what they claim), it's most likely a scam. I've been monitoring all the "oddball" numbers that I get calls from (I am on the no call list), and over 90% of them are SCAMS. Don't pick up unless you want to waste their time. ;)
I can't believe some of the morons leaving comments who actually believe that this is in any way a legitimate offer to save you money. Wake up idiots, these maggots who are calling you are looking to scam you, period. If they get one victim out of a hundred calls, they've done their job.
I called SMECO to ask what this was- they repeated back what the scammers said they are. I asked SMECO "so then this is a scam then"
Smeco says - I cant answer that.
I asked smeco- can they really lower my bill
Smeco says - yes!!
I say HOW
Smeco says ask them.
I said - this sounds like a scam to me
Smeco says " we cant say"
I hung up on both - I give out NO personal info including account numbers to ppl that called me first.
startell, hello! my electric is a co-op they have and never will have stocks nor anything to do with them, to me its a scam, way to get personal info ..... sorry seen to many others getting extra service charges they dont need. love it thank u all for tellling the truth.
So, if you're on the Do Not Call Registry, and you don't want to get these calls *regardless* of their intent, file a complaint at http://www.donotcall.gov ! I just did that, and it's a great feeling! According to the FTC's info for telemarketers, "Violators may be subject to fines of up to $16,000 per violation. Each call may be considered a separate violation."
