This is a scam. Same thing with me. I just filed a complaint with the IRS. You can file your complaint on www.tigta.gov. Click on the red box on right side of screen. I tried to call the number provided to me by an IRS agent but the call volume was too large and my options were to leave a message or go online. If you want to try the number it is 800-366-4484
Just got a voice message from this number: "This is the IRS. We are preparing to sue you. Please call us immediately." I notice it's from Washington. I'm not really awake yet, but I'm so alarmed I called back. Dialogue went like this:
Guy: "Hello, this is the IRS. Thank you for calling."
(His accent is Indian and very thick. It's difficult to understand him. I think: that's odd. You'd think the IRS would hire someone that can be understood by callers. I can hear very loud foreign accented voices in the room he is in. I think: that's odd. For a professional IRS organization, you'd think they'd have more than just one large room with a bunch of people in it.)
Me: "Hello. I got your voice mail. What's this about?"
Him: "Before we get stared, could you please tell me the number you're calling from?"
I think: The IRS doesn't have caller ID? I decide my phone is public information and they called me anyway. I'll give to him and see where this goes. I do.
Him: "Thank you. Could I get your first and last name, please?"
Me: "Sure. Joey Parks."
Him: "Jerry?"
Me: "Joey."
Him: "Johnny?"
Me: "Joey. J-o-e-y."
Him: "Jerry?"
I think: Holy crap. This guy doesn't have a clue how to understand English."
Me: "Joey"
Him: "Last name?"
Me: "Parks."
Him: "Parks. And I need to confirm your address. Are you at ___________?"
I think: He's just given me an old address, from 12 years ago, three houses from where I currently live.
Me: " I'm thinking that your are a scammer. If you were really the IRS, you would have sent me a letter about this matter, not called me on the phone, and you'd know my current address. What is your company address?"
Silence.
I hang up. I look at the phone number again. The caller ID says, "Washington", but then--as I'm mostly awake now--I notice it's "Seattle, WA".
