Who called from 2063500127

I received an e-mail from this guy responding to an add placed on Craig's list. I'm very new to this site. The e-mail address had a woman's name and the letter was signed "Jeffrey" Here's what the message said:

Thanks for the response... like I said I will buy this item so pls do withdraw the advert from Craigslist. I will also like you to know that I will be paying via certified check. I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilittate the mailing of the check..... Note: UPS will not deliver to P.O Box... 1. Your full name 2. Your mailing address be it residential address 3. Your phone number. **I will like to let you know that you will not be responsible for shipping as i will instruct my shipper to come over as soon as you have cashed the check. Jeffery 206-350-0127

So... I wrote back to him and said that this is a strictly "cash and carry" item... he comes here... pays cash... takes item.

I then immediately did a search about this area code... my guess is that this is a scam since I'm fairly certain that he can obtain this very heavy item from a nearby place and not have to look in Florida when the phone number says Seattle Washington! What I figure is that a "certified check" will be cashed on my bank account since I would have the money to cover the funds. Then the item and I noted that he used the term "item" so this could be a "form" type response, would be "shipped" to him... once the check bounced the bank would hold me responsible for the cash and so I would be out not only the "item" but also the cash as well... kinda making it a double whammy!!

I sure hope that Craig's list has some sort of notification program to protect their patrons from these types of scumbags!!

I just had the exact same thing happen with and item I was trying to sell from Craigslist. What they wrote back to me was word for word what they wrote to you.  This is a scam, and I am glad i googled there number and found your story also.  Thank you so much.

Ditto here. "Wendy" wanted to buy an item I had on Craig's List (sight unseen). "She" wanted to send me a "certified check". I told her I'd only accept payment via PayPal.

"She was too tired" to process the payment tonight, but would do it later tomorrow, and that she would also send me the money for her "shipper". Since "she" has no idea how much it weighs, how would "she" know how much to send.

The scam is, "she" wanted me to handle this in a "mature manner", and send the "shipper" his fee immediately. I told her I would only do so after "her" payment cleared my bank through PayPal. It will be interesting to see her reply to that one.

In any event, I'm glad I did a search on her phone number and found these posts. Thank you both for taking the time. I smelled a rat at the beginning. You verified it for me.

While I would have never agreed to "her" terms, it's nice to know the old brain is still working. Once again, thanks. I will be filing complaints with the entities listed on Craig's List.

Dear Monkeynurse - in the original email you received, Craig's List provided a link to their "scammers" web page. It lists various entities (including Craig's List) where you can file complaints (including the FTC and FBI). I would also contact the Seattle police department and provide the phone number to them. There is a W. Cox listed in the the Seattle area, but that doesn't mean that's who you were dealing with. The phone number area code is for Seattle, but it could be for a trac phone....in which case, the police probably won't be able to find this perp.

I also heard from this person in Craigslist after posting a ring. He left the phone number when inquiring, and the name Willian. I know the ropes in Craigs, so investigated first to find..he is a fraud out to get what he can, for nothing.  I answered his email to me on the ring after he asked if I still had it....You dont want to know what I told him....Always post Cash and Carry on Craigs...You wont get dingbats like this answering your adds....Its thanks to people like you, who post things about people like them, that make the internet fun to use.  Why there are so many dishonest people in this world is beyond me...Thanks everyone!!
