Calling for a donation to a fallen officers fund....no, I am on the do not call list for a reason!!! I do not want ANY solicitations!!! But the question is are they really legit and how is this donation to be paid? Better to send by mail if true like others do. No one should be crazy enough to give out any personal info thru the phone. So block it!

Charities are exempt from the Do Not Call List law.

Calling for donations is a relatively expensive way for a charity to get donations.  The boiler room that makes the calls typically keep about 70% of every donation.  Charities with "Police", "Highway Patrol", "Sheriff" or "Fire Department" are much worse, often keeping more than 95% of every donation to cover the price of fund raising.

Not donating was the right decision.

Rang twice, hung up, left no message.  Typical robo-dial behavior.  Since it was a local call I came here to check.  Thanks to the two kind folks that posted the info.  You're the best.

Got the same call, and called the number back anonymously--nothing but a busy signal...apparently the server is busy cold-calling a directory of numbers. I got a phone message the other day from (supposedly) the Fraternal Order of Police; I suspect it was their scam cover story to fraud someone and/or record their active phone number to sell on the market.

Firstly, by definition...if someone calls me and I don't know them, they are a stranger. It is the stranger's responsibility to validate who they are, if they fail to do so, they're either incompetent and/or scammers. This phone call failed to validate themselves.

Secondly, I would never give a stranger my hard earned money, it's not safe/smart--if the conditions were safe, I'd consider providing them information about city resources and help centers; that allows the city to verify if they have a legitimate need for resources (not money, and definitely not my personal information).

Thirdly, if someone were truly led to donate money to a charitable cause, then donate the money directly to the charity itself...after finding out how much of the donation will actually find its way to the individuals in need. Giving a middle-man stranger money, in the hopes that the stranger will pass on the money is just foolish.
