had it from MN
I just checked my messages after being gone for a few days, a heavy accented man stating that I was in trouble with the legal affairs and I should call back or have my lawyer call back due to the starting of a legal action against me. Who are these people and what the H---- do they want.  This is the 3rd scam call I've received this week. I am on the DNC list but these calls keep coming through. On the caller ID, these calls say they are from CA, Oregon, New Jersey, Florida and some say private caller. I'm really getting sick of this. I thought the DNC list was to prevent these calls from happening. My son has told me that someone has been selling peoples e-mail interests as well as phone numbers to these scammers. They need to stop.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

I got a call from this number and said his name was Brian Gibson and that I need to call back asap. I know it is a scam I blocked a different number last time from these people on my cell phone. But I can't block anymore so I will let it go to voice mail. He was saying something about legal affairs it was hard to understand him, Well all I know is I am tired of getting these calls. What ever they can keep on calling and I won't answer. The number is in the Los Angeles area.

Annoyed
My boyfriend got a call from a woman with a severely thick indian accent claiming to be Bella Vincent. It sounded like she was reading from a prompt, she could barely read it. Claiming that my boyfriend filed his taxes incorrectly, my boyfriend has been filing his taxes with the same people Jackson Hewitt for over 10 years. Never had an issue. They threatened to have my boyfriend arrested at his job or home. My boyfriend asked them to verify his social security number but the man went to the next question. The man then went on to say that if my boyfriend didn't pay the "$1200 he owed" in full today- he would be arrested. My boyfriend told them to send the police and hung up the phone.

I am going to the Consumer Protection website right now to file a complaint! And we're thinking about taking legal action- because that's the only way to get them to stop.

Can't really take legal action because these scammers are located in India and beyond the reach of US law.

Report them anyway:  http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam
