I got a call from the same company. They gave the same phone number, even though their caller ID showed a different number. When I called the number they gave me, the same person who called me picked up the phone. Definitely sounde like a boiler room. I just filed a complaint about them with the Do Not Call website.
7/15 9:04 PDT Just tried to call again. ID shows blank, didn't stay on long enough to get to voicemail this time. Obviously, not terribly important and certainly not worth my time to answer.
Well we are felling very embarrassed but we think we have just been "cased" for a future burglary and thought we should share the experience so others might not be as gullible.
Last night we got a call from a very nice and personable woman who called herself "Stephanie Church" and said she worked for a nice 80 year old jeweler at US American Jewelry at 606 South Hill in the jewelry district. She claimed that we had done business with the company in the past, but also said that it may have been a while ago and we might not remember. We have in fact done business with jewelers in that (HUGH) building so it sounded kind of legit. She already had my full legal name (which I don't use much as I go by a nickname) as well as our address. She said they were looking to buy Jewelry and paid "Top dollar". My wife has one piece of Jewelry that she doesn't wear very often that she was interested in converting into a vacation trip so she talked to the lady and setup an appointment for them to come out to the house (oops) to look at the piece. Shortly after hanging up she started to feel that something wasn't right and tried to call her back to cancel. The phone number that she was given was disconnected. The caller ID showed a different number (213-260-2853) but that number is always busy (even at 5:50 AM!). The address she was give (606 South Hill Street, suite 1206) belongs to a different business with a different phone number (which just goes to a generic answering machine). Calling information resulted in no listings for that company at that address. Googling for the caller ID number results in a few hits such as this site, but nothing more.
The time for the appointment has come and gone and no one showed up or called. We're afraid that they WILL should up some night when we least suspect it.
We have called the police and was told that "no crime has been committed" (yet). When we asked if they had heard of this we were only told that "there are lots of scams" and to be sure to keep or doors and windows locked. We are going to do that for sure!
