Scamming - saying that he is a "special agent" and was going to give a lady in our church $2.5 million. He needed her credit card number, social security, and mother's maiden name in order to "verify" her.
Woman with difficult accent could not keep the story straight when questioned. The basic story is that I had won a 2nd place cash prize from a June drawing. Two representatives would meet me at my bank to cash the check. That became a FedEx rep would deliver a check to my home. In response to "then what" I was told that I would need to present a receipt to a company rep. In reply to "a receipt for what?" I was told a receipt for $500 from checking account to the company rep. I told her that if I had indeed won a sweepstakes prize, she was obliged by local, state, and federal laws to present that award to me, and I welcomed her to do so, but that I had no intention of giving her or her agents any treasure in return. That would constitute an illegal lottery and we could all face time in Leavenworth. I asked her again if she was prepared to cut a check and present it through lawful channels and there was no response. I said "I'll take that as a no, then" and hung-up.
Legit sweepstakes do not operate this way, and it was entertaining toying with her.
