Under the Fair Debt Collection Act they must provide you with written verification of the debt within a short period of time. IF they do not provide you with the verification of the debt, the debt is invalid and not subject to collection. PAY NOTHING TO ANYBODY UNLESS THEY PROVIDE YOU WITH WRITTEN VERIFICATION OF THE DEBT, AND ONLY THEN IF YOU FEEL THE DEBT IS VALID - otherwise, let them sue you for the debt, as a real law firm will only bring a legal action on a truly valid debt.
Claims I owe almost $200 from Columbia House from 2007. Claims to be a debt recovery. I asked for proof of the order - what I ordered, contracts that I signed, etc. as I have never received info that there was an order placed or that I had an outstanding debt. She hung up on me.
Claims I owe $3000 from 2000. When asked for proof of debt, itemized statements, contracts etc....she claimed she could not do that and became nasty. Stated it was my responsibility to pay this debt!!!! I told her until she could send me something as proof that I owed it, I was not paying her anything. She was nasty again, told her I was at work and hung up.
