I got a call this morning with the same questions......They asked for a doctor that had the same first and last name as me, but the wrong middle initial and the address was where I had an office over three years ago...
I called back, got the same person, Bianca, who said they were a third party working for insurance companies.
Immediately started asking questions about our medical practice without identifying herself. When I interrupted, and asked what the call was for, she said she was from an insurance company & verifying that we had treated a patient. She gave me the name, and said the person also had aliases, so I should also search by birthdate/SSN.
She also asked intrusive questions about our record-keeping practices that were not related specifically to that patient.

I have received many phone calls from people stating they worked for insurance companies and were checking to see if so and so was a patient. I have told them without a signed form from the patient, I am unable to release any info. (None of the names that I have been given were patients of ours.) When I called the insurance company to inquire about this practice, they suggested I get last names and return #s of the callers to report to their fraud department. I'm still unsure of what the scam is though??

Received a telephone call identified herself as Ashley with Traveler's Insurance looking for patient information. Were we a "refill pharmacy"? Asked for her telephone number, which she gave as (314) 714-5866. Then asked for her address... said St. Paul then she hesitated, fessed up - 3rd party not directly with Travelers. Told her that she should have identified herself as such. She said she did (which she did not). She got frustrated and hung up.
