It is being used by phone scammers to obtain your debit card information. They call and leave a message that they are from Commerce Bank and your card has been illegally used in Canada. They say to call them back at 866-203-1396. There you will get a real person who asks for your card information. Commerce Bank will NEVER ask for your card information.
Commerce bank calls you and leaves that number so you can reach them directly in the fraud security department... which is what the message says. They may ask for a card number, but it is so they can find you in the system. If your bank calls you and says they want to verify activity on your card... CALL THEM BACK!!!!! They most likely want to keep someone else from using your card fradulently, but need to confirm with you... I know from personal experience.
If you are uncomfortable making giving card information to them, ask if they can ID you another way. Bottom line is that they are looking at the information on their screen. They just need to pull your info up in the system, since they make hundreds of calls a day. Call the number on the back of your card and ask for the security department... but CALL THEM BACK!!

and why wouldn't commerce ask for your card information? It's technically an account number... that's how they operate. By account numbers. That is a stupid thing to say, that a bank won't ask for your account number. Any automated system you call asks... is it so unreasonable to think a person would need that information to pull up your account, too? I don't think so.
