I know 2 ways this scam can work. Both start with them asking for your credit card number "for identification.
1) Legal. They send the card. But it comes with an expensive, worthless buyers club, with the membership fee charged to your card. It takes months to get the club cancelled. By the time you get it cancelled you've paid membership fees much higher than the $1000 gift card.
2) Illegal. They do not send the card. They charge your card to or beyond the limit and vanish.
