got a call from this number and a woman identified herself as first merit bank customer satisfaction. I said we were in the process of closing the accounts because of dissatisfaction and she replied she couldn't talk to me because of HIPAA rules. I went downstairs and my elderly dad told her to talk to me. She repeated the HIPAA bit and when I told her that was medical privacy, she apologized and meant financial privacy and that I wasn't a signatory on the account (true) and we both had to go to the branch. Trouble is, that this is the bank that seemingly worked with the scammers who took tens of thousands of $ from my pennypinching dad 3 and 4 years ago, before I started taking care of him full time, including many using bank checks, which this bank (branch manager or corporate I don't know) then said they couldn't trace. My dad and also-elderly and sometime immobile uncle twice in the past 6 weeks or so had me make cash deposits to an account, and the branch manager said she knew people were taking advantage of my dad until I became involved. I also told this caller about a bounced utility bill and how I paid it out of my own account. Now, as a result of this multi-party call I learned that the deposits and my dad's social security were to savings accounts, yet automatic withdrawal of utility bills comes from checking. By evening I learned from my dad that he doesn't want me on the account but wants to transfer the funds to another bank because of the schenanigans and branch complicity (he wants to believe the fraud was really for kids' medical expenses even though calls at the time to the involved hospitals couldn't confirm it).
Received a call tonight about 5:31 PM. Caller ID said FirstMeritBank. My husband said, "hello." but no one appeared to be there and he hung up. I used reverse phone look-up and found this number to be a private number in the Akron, Ohio, area. Then I looked up First Merit Bank numbers to call for service and found this number to be one for customers to call First Merit Bank from OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY of USA. I called First Merit Bank and the representative confirmed that last part and said her number look-up showed the above number listed as some type of credit service in Akron, Ohio. This is fishy. We have been getting numeous calls of these types lately and don't give info over the phone. Beware of caller ID's saying things they are not. Always check with the legitimate place to be sure first.
Verified Apple Pay today through FirstMerit. Then I get a voicemail from this number stating they are from FirstMerit Fraud Department and asked me to call. I called the main number for FirstMerit (not the number left by the caller). They checked all of my accounts and said the call was to verify that I set up Apple Pay because they have experienced a large volume of fraud pertaining to Apple Pay. Turned out to be legitimate.
First Merit Bank, calling to tell me that I'm pre-approved for some credit card. I have a loan through First Merit, that's how they got my information.
