I received a call today from a man who said his name was "George" with what I believe to be an Indian accent. He claimed to be from the American Airlines Fraud Unit and was alerting me to the fact that someone had purchased airline tickets under my name, with my credit card - and he used the last 4 digits of my credit card as a reference. He said "if this is (my name) and this is your credit card, please call me back." He said to call him back at 571-258-4611 ext. 69076. I was immediately suspicious that it might be some kind of phishing scam. After listening to this suspicious call, I immediately called our credit card company and discovered that several airline tickets had been purchased this week fraudently with our stolen credit card number and a third reservation was "pending." (There were also other unauthorized charges, for a total of $2,000 over a 3-4 day period.) I immediately cancelled the credit card before any more damage could be done. I called the number that "George" provided and was asked, by a woman's voice on an answering machine, for a detailed message to be left by me. It sounded poorly done and suspicious. Fearing that the number provided might be a phoney set-up, perhaps a phishing scheme, from the very criminals who stole my credit card number, and who were hoping to obtain more personal information from me, by claiming to be legitimate investigators, to use to attempt identity theft. I did not leave any message - instead I hung up the phone. I then Googled the telephone number that "George" provided and came up with WHO'S CALLING ME? which displayed a page of similar complaints from others involving American Airlines tickets purchased with their stolen credit card number. Our credit card fraud unit has been alerted and they are actively working on solving this crime.
i am very suspicious about this number and the people who work for this department. i got a call three months back stating that she is Florence wanting my credit card information. she could not follow me and nor could i. united will not hire people who cannot speak english and cannot understand their so called guests. the lady could not say my name without mistake. united if she is from your department she needs english tutoring. please do not trust this number and the people who call from this number.
