Just got a serious sounding message, Officer Paul...something, I couldn't understand through the thick accent... said my attorney needed to contact, the message was a bit vague. I looked it up online and found that these calls are generally an IRS or tax scam, beware!
1st- to those slamming muslims or saying this guy sounds Indian- A) there's nothing to indicate this scammer's religion, so that's just stupid; B) When I got this message I thought the guy's accent sounded more Eastern European to me.. Croatia, czech, etc
Anyway, let it go to voicemail on my landline, caller ID says Arlington VA & an urgent & serious man identifies himself as "Officer Kevin Peterson from the Internal Revenue Service... to let you know that you are being listed as a primary suspect in a case being filed by the IRS in regards to some tax fraud committed either by you or your CPA... Would like to speak w/you right away because we are about to issue a non-bailable arrest warrant... Would like to talk to your lawyer on a very urgent basis with a direct line, on my desk which is 571-290-2026.. Do not ignore this call.." That's all I can remember.
My BS meter was going off right away, but gotta hand it to the guy, he does speak with enough urgency & certainty that I can see how some people would get sucked in. And while I usually can tell right away when something is a recorded message, when I picked up the call at the end of the message to talk to this person, I was surprised to find it was just a message.
There are so many clues as to the bogus nature of this call & many like it- for one, official government entities have all kinds of privacy regulations.. They would ask to speak to a specific person, they would not leave personal information regarding your case on an answering machine or talk to anyone but you other than to leave callback info, & all the other red flags others have mentioned. I marvel at how blatantly obvious these scams are, & yet- they only exist because somewhere out there, enough people are falling for them.. often a trusting elderly person :(
Just got the same call, said a warrant was being issued for my arrest for tax fraud, wanted my lawyer to call him immediately.
what an idiot. Unfortunately how many people fall for this BS? He used the name Kevin Peterson, and he had a foreign accent.
This man left me a message on voicemail stating i was being investigated for tax fraud and there will be an arrest warrent issued if i dont return the call.
I have search google and found many with the same complaints. My guess is when you call back, then they can hack the smart phone and get the data they are after.
