I received a telephone call at our Palm Desert home and a young women claiming to be my grand-daughter said she had been in a car accident in Fullerton, California, suffered a broken nose and had been arrested for DUI. She said a lawyer provided by the police was able to get the DUI charge dropped but she had to pay for damages to the other vehicle before the police would release her. She gave me the name and phone number for her lawyer and then had the "lawyer" speak with me and he said the damage payment required was $3,890. When I asked how I could transfer the money, he said I would have to buy a pre-paid Target Gift Card. I then realized  that this was a scam and I told the lawyer that I would have to confirm with the police department that this method of payment was acceptable. The lawyer then hung up on me.
After confirming that my grand-daughter was safely at home in Canada, I looked up the phone number in the reverse directory and it indicated that this was a cellphone phone number listed in Toronto, Canada.
I subsequently decided to call that number the next day and a man answered the phone with, "Miami Police Department". When I told the man I was surprised that the Miami police department had a Toronto telephone number, he hung up on me!
