Probably not a total scam but they did use a automatic dialer which was calling from a list of known names and numbers. I know this because there was dead air when I answered and then a lady came on within 2 seconds. She asked for me by name. She gave me her name and the name of the company: "Smart Construction", which is not typical of scammers. She probably got my name off the public records in Palo Alto, as I've done some recent remodeling and pulled several permits. This 650-681 exchange is a local Palo Alto exchange, too. Anyway, I read her the riot act (she got the polite version, as she was willing to pause her spiel, which I didn't listen to) and hung up on her.
Just did some more research. I take it back -- about this being almost legitimate.
650-681-4495 is the number (happens to be a Palo Alto exchange) that's been spamming my phone for months now. The caller ID on the call I answered said "Palo Alto CA", so I answered, thinking it might even be the cell phone of one of my contractors. But looking at my Comcast call history, I see that 650-681-4495 is the number with caller ID of "V6181234470000369900". They also use
Same scammer, spoofed Bay Area numbers. The "burn" will come when enough people are bothered enough to complain to the FTC, which is on the verge of "enabling" phone companies to block telemarketing parasites.
