There was a lot of background noise when they called. The guy knew my name and the city where I live.
He said they are raising funds for the New York Police Defense Foundation. That group's site does list this telemarketing farm as one of the fundraisers (see info below). That said, this foundation stopped reporting information to the BBB and Charity Navigator gives them a zero star rating http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=8527
Very suspicious and I doubt if any police officer's family sees a penny out of them. As a general rule, I never donate to people calling for money. It's much better to contact the group directly that you want to support and ask them how you can give. That way you're sure you're dealing with a legitimate organization and that the money you're giving will actually get to help people rather than lining the pockets of middle men.
