I received a call from this number today. I was on the other line, so the call went to my voicemail. This call was actually from one of our clients in rural Alaska. I believe he was calling with a phone card, so this phone number is likely a routing number for the phone card company.
The calls from this number are a "Pre-Paid" card for mobile phones. Someone you know is trying to call you by using this phone card because they do not have long distance capability on their mobile phone.
The caller from this number claimed that he headed a highly-respectable orgnaization (ISESCO) and that they had plans to implement a big project in Jordan. He said a colleague of his (an MIT graduate in tunour surgery)would arrive in Jordan from America and would contact me regarding the project. The co-conspirator then called and gave details about his flight (RJ 264 from Chicago)and the hotel (Grand Hyatt) in which he would be staying in Amman.
The next morning he called and said that because of weather conditions in the United States, his flight was diverted to Miami, Fla, and that he and his wife were stranded there because airport authorities refused to give him access to his baggage in which he claimed his wife had put all their money and papers. The authorities, he added, informed him that since his baggage was checked in in Los Angeles and since its final destination was Amman, Jordan, it would be sent there directly. He requested that I transfer, via MoneyGram, the amount of 1,578 United States Dollars to a certain "Maria Patricia Toro, of United Travel in Coral Gables, Forida" so that he could buy new one-way tickets to Amman, via JFK.
All the details he gave regarding flight numbers and hotel addresses were authentic. But, when we checked with the hotel, they said they had no reservations for that person. The ailine also said that the list of passengers from Chicago to Amman did not have that name. When we contacted ISESCO, they drew our attention to an international gang that specializes in this type of fraud (see their notice on isesco.org.ma). We found out that the same scenario was acted on many other people. Unfortunately, some did actually send the money.
