I received a call from this number this morning. The person with an unplaceable accent (Indian?) claimed, that I have failed to respond to two mail messages, sent from IRS, which is filing a case against me, and they are forced to transfer the case to the local police, which might show up at my door at any moment and detain me for 72 hours before presenting my case to court. She also said that this is a courtesy call just so I would not be surprised by the police. She even gave me an "IRS reference number" and warned me that my assets might be frozen, my car might be confiscated, and I might face 5 to 7 years imprisonment for having discrepancies in my tax returns for the last four years.
I got startled (I did move recently, and missing some mail constantly), and tried to ask her what discrepancies they found in my tax returns (I use TurboTax, and check everything three times before filing), and she said that I need to use "certified" software (?), and finally asked if I want a public attorney to represent me.
Good thing my wife suggested to check the number for being a fraud…
They did not ask for money (yet?) nor to call back, but I did, and the message on the voicemail has a British accent...
This call says they are the IRS and there is a federal investigation against me, that I owe money, and I must call back to avoid any legal prosecution.
