For the past 4 months I've been billed for anywhere from 2-7 calls to 411 (at $1.99 each) on my home phone bill. I never call 411. A few days ago I checked my caller ID when I got home from work, and the number 740-555-1212 Dir Asst OH was there. Of course, they didn't leave a message.
I'm now thinking that somehow this is showing up on my phone bill as if I placed the directory assistance call. I've asked AT&T to block my ability to even call 411, but if this is some kind of reverse thing then even that measure probably won't help. Any suggestions?
Received a call from this number but the caller ID showed "Dir Assist OH" - whatever the %%% that is....
When I looked up the number on the Internet there were dozens of companies, people, colleges, etc, listed as having used this number. Since a REAL phone number can only be used be ONE (1) REAL person/entity at a time, I assumed it was just another spammer. There were also several sites listing this as a number used by scammers that have called them with several numbers. They were the scams where they try to scare you into thinking they will be taking you to court to be charged with a crime, etc., or just come for you at home or work and haul you off.
I never answered the call so I can't say exactly what they would have said, but I assume they're just more worthless scammers. And since I never answer ANY calls that come in where I don't recognize the name (person or company) I won't worry about it. If someone calls and I don't answer and they are legit, they will leave a message.
555-1212 is directory assistance. Put any area code in front and call, you will get directory assistance for that area code. Any phone # with a 555 prefix is a phone company service #.
I didn't answer this call as is my normal practice when it comes to numbers, names or area codes unrecognized by me.

Why would directory assistance in Ohio be calling the west coast for the first person in this thread and then me on the east coast? It's probably a spoofed number being used by another scammer.
