It makes no difference if they are dialing your number by mistake or you actually owe money, you can collect up to $1,000 by fed. law plus any actual damage under federal law (the Fair Debt. Collection Practices Act).
Do Not Call list does not apply to collection companies.
Other sites have reported this as CAPITOL RECOVERY ASSOCIATES COLLECTIONS (CRA), a debt collection company. If you have a collection company harassing you with repeated calls (especially with an automated dialer), failing to identify themselves, or at odd times of the day, etc., they are in violation of the Fair Debt. Collection Practices Act.
I do have a ATT&T screen service but for some odd reason non of their numbers can get blocked, also they can by pass the unknown rejection call ID. Thereby no way to filter them, if you try to call back their numbers it said it is non working #. If you answer , most part time of time nobody answer, if you tell them the person that you looking for it dose not own this # anymore, they don't believe and they keep call. They have no scruple.
I am going to try THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY according to ATT&T annoyance service once you register to https://www.donotcall.gov/ by law they are obligated to stop calling you. You can tell them that you are register with National do not call service and their calls put them in violation with Federal Trade Commission Regulation. Then they stop or theoretically they should get busted by FTC.
If that didn't work, then we just have to change our phone #, and if it is a business number and you have already business cards out there and advertisement lunched such as my case then I don't know.
What I wonder is how they got my cell phone number. If you have them calling your cell, check your phone to see if you can set it not to ring when that number calls. My phone does that.
Forget about the Do Not Call list. It is not enforced - if you want to enforce it, you have to sue. There is info on the 'net on how to do that if you are so inclined.
CRA: had this wino sounding woman mis-pronouncing my name, lol....on answering machine, DEMANDING.....I call her back IMMEDIATELY or whomever represents me must call her IMMEDIATELY.
I hope she calls back . I have this ear-splitting whistle waiting. :) Hope it pops her eardrum.
These people called me and tried to tell me that the IRS was going to come after me due to a B of A credit card I had 21 years ago...huh? I said are you kidding me, you're coming after a 21 year old, $400.00 debt?! He argued with me telling me that I am lying and that I had been making payments and then started yelling at me "FINE YOU CAN DEAL WITH THE IRS THEN"!!! And then he hung up on me! Huh?! WTF!!!
CRA calls me from various numbers at least 5 times a day on my personal cell phone. They're obviously breaking the law and using thug tactics to strongarm people into making mistakes and either admitting to debt that they don't have to pay, or obtaining information to further their harassment. Calling the BBB and other government agencies isn't helping, and doing anything else seems to fuel their fire. All the while, their auto-dial computers are harassing us every day. So how do you stop them?
By wasting their money!
I advise everyone who is being harassed by these goons to do what I'm currently doing. Every time I get called from a blocked number or one of their numbers, I answer the phone so the computer will connect me with an operator, (sometimes you have to actually say "hello"), then when I hear a voice I put the phone on mute at give them a dead line. Usually, they'll keep saying "hello" over and over for about a minute before hanging up. This costs their company money in phone time and operator time, which is the reason why they have the auto-dial computer in the first place.
Now, I have a ton of rollover minuets for which I could do this with, and the cost to them is very small, but over time, if I can get 5 minuets a day of their time, it could really add up. The debt they're calling about is literally $250, so my goal is to waist that amount of money.
Also, if you have the minuets and the time, you could expedite the process by actually talking to them. DO NOT ADMIT TO OWNING THE DEBT, or don't even talk about the debt at all. (Check with your state laws about what to say and not to say. Sometimes they could bring the debt back on your record just because you said it was yours at one time). KEEP THE OPERATOR ON THE PHONE, talk about the weather, flirt with them, anything to keep them on the phone and NOT talking about the debt. The more time they're on the phone, the more money CRA looses on a debt they'll never collect.
I believe that if more and more people do this, over time, CRA will go bankrupt. Let's may CRA pay for every auto-dial we get!!
