Who called from 2022410697

I reported this to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (even though it was made via telephone).

Message on telephone:  "Hi.  This message is for Mr. (My Name), and I am calling you from the Crime Investigation Division from the headquarter (sic) of Washington, D.C., and the reason of my call is to inform you that you have illegal charge against you, and your social security is under federal investigation, so if you want to get more information, call me back on my direct number.  That is 202 241 0697 (sic).  I repeat, 202 241 0697  (sic).  (And look for?) Stacy Thompson, Federal (state?) ID number 357255, extension number 212.  If you get this message, call me back as soon as possible, and I will assist you (farther? for the?) information."

Note:  Caller ID said the call came in 16 April 2014, 2:19 pm, phone number 202 241 0967.  Stacy Thompson says in her message to call her back at 202 241 0697 (numbers transposed).  I guess her script has the wrong phone number on it, or she mis-remembers her phone number.

She has an accent -- Indian? Reminds me of Raj's sister Priya Koothrappali from "The Big Bang Theory," (but, of course, I may be mistaken).

Yes, they're Indian, sometimes also Pakistani. Total scam. Use 202 area code to make you think they are calling on behalf of the federal government.  Total scam.

This numer has been calling and leaving messages stating that we are under IRS investigation, I called the number and an answer machine picked up stating that this is IRS investigation, when they left a message they mentioned my first and last name and case number. The caller had a heavy accent.hope they will be caught soon.

Received a call from the same phone number as listed in other posts (202-241-0697) from a man with a thick accent. Very noisy background and it took a few seconds before someone came on the line. He asked me "Can I ask who I am speaking with". I told him no (firmly) and asked who he was. He hesitated and then told me I was under investigation and a warrant was being issued for my arrest. I told him Bullxxxx and hung up on him. Sure glad I had been informed of this scam previously. What I don't understand, if this specific number is so common, why someone in authority can't shut it down.
