Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

I too, received this same message.  It originated out of Cape Coral, FL  One thing I don't know anyone from there.  Glad I checked here.  I tried to call the number and it was a fast busy signal. They also said there was 2 cases against me, and I needed to call the number immediately. They even  gave me a fictitious number to the case. I will also call the trade commission and report them.  Glad I looked on here

Contacted me in reference to what they call a legal claim on a payday loan from 2008. I have never in my life taken out a payday loan. They are full of crap and the guy I spoke with was completely rude and aggressive. I will be reporting this number along with any numbers associated.

This number called me earlier today and left an automated message stating that there was a complaint against me and to call 251-301-9797. However, when I called that number it was not in service. I called the number that called me and they must have caller ID because they said my name when they answered. A John Durrell stated that I owed a pay day loan from 2010 with Kenwood Services and a complaint was being filed with the state. He said the name of their company is Capital Services. He told me that I had until the end of the business day to settle. He had the last four of my social, email address, former employer and bank information. I checked my email going back to 2010 and had no information corresponding to what he was referring to. When I called back to obtain a validation letter, a Ms. Williams answered the phone and stated she would email it to me. I requested it be sent via mail and she became rude. I told her I was filing a complaint and to send the letter. She stated she wasn't sending me anything. BEWARE!
I have filed a complaint at consumerfinance.gov
