If you type in your number, your only verifying its correctness and working status.
This allows your number to be validated and sold to another team.
The only way to avoid this is NEVER give your number. PERIOD.
Have a separate SCAN Number you can give when your asked and you dont know the person or company.
POLICE also use this technique to track and verify individuals, to see if they are home or not, and to assess their status and actions/movements from one area to another.

This my friends is a collection agency, NCO to be precise.
They have numerous offices throughout the united states. They will use any trick in the book to get you on the phone. So Beware!they tell you to remove the number but I truly beleive this is a phone tracking system so your number isn't really removed and they just keep calling. I have removed my number numerous times and about an hour after i do this i get a call.
I am going to find this dip [***] and kick him or her in the teeth. On my caller ID it says sales dept. I have removed my number numerous times and yet they still call. I have pressed one to speak to someone and I cursed them off and said that I have asked them to stop calling and I am sick of the harassment!!! The man I spoke to said there are differnt locations and not all the locations get the message that you want to be removed. Yeah ok!!! Anyway, they also have a different scam everytime, sometimes it's about my mortgage and sometimes i won a vacation (bacation, that is how the [***] says it) They call until 9 pm and it is the worst when I am trying to put the kids to bed!!!!!!1
someone calls and just sits there..about 20 times a day..starting at 730 AM till 10 PM..i have a 6 yr old with Down syndrome..harrasing the disabled is a crime as the phone scares her...
