I consider these calls harassment and stalking. I will be writing my US Senator and Congressman to bring this issue (and this particular number as an example) to their attention and ask that they expand the "do not call" program to include non-profit organizations. We get 6 - 10 calls a day from solicitors --some people, some computers.
Another call from this number...also "fire fighters" I asked to speak with a supervisor..caller then hung up. We are on both PA and Fed do not call list. Call at 9:00pm 2/25/2010
If you are getting calls from this number, never pick up the phone and keep an eye on your property. The last time I got a call from a number like this, my car was broken into. This seems to be associated with some gang that is numerous, highly organized and often wears red and black.
Definitely report it to the police (after this number has hung up after calling you, pickup the phone and dial *57 to request a trace, but you have to do it before another call comes in because it only does the most recent call), and make sure there is no one watching your block for opportunities to break in. If there are mysterious ads on neighborhood doors or car windows, take them all down. These are one of a burglary ring's first ways of tracking who is and is not home, and selecting a target to steal from.
Also, NEVER give out your social security number, bank information, or other financial or identifying information to people who call you. If someone unexpectedly comes to your house claiming to be a workman or etc., do not open the door but find out who they are and who they work for, and look up the phone number of the company yourself and call the company to verify that there really is that person working for them who is supposed to be at your house, and why and for how long. This is all fun for the people who perpetrate it, but not fun for the victims. Be careful out there.
The Do Not Call list has a built-in loophole that these numbers may be called for "marketing" or "surveys" so that phishers and other jerks who want something from you just claim to be doing surveys and then find out if you are home, or try to get your bank info, or whatever. At the present time, I am aware of no action being taken to ensure that callers actually even represent legitimate marketing firms. If you are being harassed by constant calls I would certainly put a trace on it and report it to the police -- it may stop after that.
