I foolishly filled out something on LinkedIn thinking it was legit! Then they called me with the whole 'you are wonderful spiel and for only $1000. I told them I wasn't interested. They haven't called for about 3 weeks but it started again this week.
I also got an email that said I had signed up to Bristol's Who's Who - amusing because it was Worldwide Who's Who I had started to sign up to!
Now they call on a private mobile number and when I don't answer that they immediately call my desk phone. I've taken to not giving my name when I answer my mobile and when they ask for me say, 'She's not available can I take a message'. They won't leave one but then immediately call my desk.
Today I had a call from a number that came up as a NY number (I'm in Australia) which I ignored. About 10 minutes later my desk phone rang, as I was expecting a call answered it and heard a woman's voice with lots of noise in the background. I then remained silent and they hung up.
I got the call and immediately asked if there was a charge to be in the whos who, and she said no, so I answered all of her questions. Then she said that it would be like $1000 to be a lifetime member and I told her I wouldn't have wasted my time if she'd told me that up front. She said there is no charge for the basic package and then tried to explain why I don't want the basic package. I interrupted her and told her I would not have wasted my time on her questions and that I would only do the basic package, period. At that point she HUNG UP ON ME!
Yes. It is a scam through LinkedIn. I happened to click on the Alumni of the University of Sheffield and the drama started. I have not picked up the call but was curious as to who was trying to get in touch with me from this number.
