Those sort of number/letter combos, along with very short numbers, sometimes are used to get past call-blockers. I understand that there are call-blockers that can deal with them, but not all models can. Strange numbers also are used to entice the unsuspecting to answer a call. The vic sees this strange number on caller ID, and picks up the call. Won't work as a number to be called back, but as a Live Trap, you would be surprised how many people fall for it.
Answered, got the tell tale long pause while the automated dialing computer connected to a human.. Very stern, deliberately intimidating male voice says... " This is the Police" then (in a much less discernible tone) adds Some "Association or another". So it was obvious that this was one of those police benevolent society fund collecting deals.. Scam?... Who knows... Just too scammy to even consider... Hung up in mid sentence.
This number appears to be a VIOP which means it could be from anywhere using a number. I did not answer it nor was a message left. This number is familiar and has called before.
From what my police family members tell me these callers are not quite a scam. Apparently they do give a few percent of what they collect to police organizations, and pocket the rest! They are not in anyway part of any organized police organizations.
