I applied for an installment loan approximately two weeks ago. I have been receiving calls from this number 201-443-9128. Two days ago I received an email with an attachment -it was a letter, with the Advance America Cash Advance letterhead. It said I qualified for a loan with up to 48 months to repay the loan, however -first I needed to pay $200.00, this was to proof I am financially strong and able to repay the loan. When I inquired about "why" I was required to pay money out first, before getting the loan -the individual began to get upset. I asked what office he was with -he said New Jersey- I, also, told him I was calling my local office to inquire about their policies. One other thing I thought was strange -when I called and told him I was calling regarding an email confirmation letter, the man knew exactly who I was!! Surprisingly he did not ask for any verifying information -as a normal company would. When I questioned him on that, he said I had applied for a loan a couple days ago and received this letter today -that was how he knew who it was. I corrected him, letting him know I had applied for a loan about two weeks ago and had received this email about three to four days ago.
Things to remember about loans offered by phone or e-mail: (Pay attention to item #4!)
Loans
1. No reputable lender will lend you money over the phone.
2. No reputable lender will lend you money by e-mail
3. On-line lenders are nothing more than conduits for another loan scam.
4. Advance fees for loans are always illegal. At least in most American states.
5. If you want to borrow money, go to an established brick and mortar lender that has been around awhile.
6. If you receive a call from someone with an Indian accent either a. threatening you or b. offering you something, you know it’s a scam and you should hang up immediately.
7. These people are predators, the calls are not random, they have information that they have bought from various sources and know your financial history. If you have ever taken out a pay-day loan, they have all your information. They know who they are calling. They like to pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and sometimes members of the immigrant community. Also, those who might be in financial difficulty.
