This call came in on my landline at 8:31 this a.m. from Dumont NJ. I did not answer and there was no message.
After reading the above comments from those who did pick up, I am grateful for my Panasonic phone that has caller I.D. and a way to block future calls from this scammer and all the others I receive almost daily. When will these people ever get a life.
Called me at 3:19PM on 9/7/15. No one on the other line. Stated to put me on the do not call list. They call again.. I can sue.
I wish we could sue our phone companies that allow this abuse. We report it to these forums, but THEY can't do something about it? They could but it would cost them because the spammers pay them money to abuse us...
He said that he was from Windows technical support. But later on in the conversation, he took that back and said he never said he was from Windows. He said that Windows had detected a problem in my computer that I didn't yet know about because I am not a computer technician. He said that he could guide me through the steps to fix the problem. He tried to get me to press the four-flag key + the R key on my laptop. I asked him to explain what doing so would do to my computer. He said I would be able to retrieve my computer's unique license number and check it against the number he has. I asked him to give me the number he had, first. It took a while for him to comply, but he did. I still refused to press any keys and asked for all the steps in the process ahead of time, so I could do research on my own before proceeding, as I was not satisfied with the explanations he was giving to me and did not feel I could trust him. He would not tell me anything more and kept trying to get me to give him the CLSID number of my computer. He also didn't explain to me clearly enough how computer licenses work. I have two laptops. Which one has the problem? Why can't he tell me? He could not answer any of my questions, but we kept going for some time. I told him that I would go to the police, if he did anything that made my computer operate differently after talking with him. He just gave the same rote explanation of who he was and how he was trying to help me. If he was truly from Microsoft or Windows or any kind of genuine technical support company, he was terrible at listening and rapport-building. Meanwhile, I Googled "four flag key Windows + R key" and got a hit for a webpage where several people had reported a scam with a similar story. I told the caller about this and said that I did not want to proceed. He said he understood my concern and kept trying to convince me that he was genuine, going back into the same story. I was about to tell him again that I was going to go to the police with his phone number. But, ironically, though I had kept trying to end the call, saying I did not want to proceed, he ended up abruptly hanging up on me. This phone call felt very harassing and disturbing-of-the-peace, in nature. I hope someday that all scammers will be stopped, so that people can answer their phones without feeling wary or suspicious.
