after getting this *private number* calling me for days on end, I finally just picked up the telephone. It was a prerecorded message saying that I was under tax investigation and that I had to call this 201 telephone number immediately to avoid having my assets and bank accounts seized.. I received a call similar to this about 6 months ago. It is a tax scam. If you get the message do not call the number back. Valid IRS and state tax officials would contact you directly by mail and not call from a private number.

I had the exact same experience. For a moment a touch of panic set in. But then I typed the number into the google search engine and found, that it originated in New Jersey,,, a private land line. It was then that I remembered the same scam about six month ago. I had phoned my daughter at that time and she also assured me that the IRS would not call, instead be in touch with me directly. Thanks for your post...you saved my day. I only wish that there was a way to shut these criminals down.
Pete.

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

If you were contacted by an IRS impostor, you may file a report, after clicking on this link:
