A man with a thick African accent called me on my Google Voice number. It wasn't going to cost me anything, and I needed an entertainment break, so I kept him on the line for like 1/2 hour until his manager told him he had to get off.  I duly hope I didn't keep him too long! :)

This is the scam. He says he is from Luminosity (sp?) and he is going to deliver to me $3000. For what? I asked many times, but that question went ignored. He first asked when I would be home so that the UPS guys would deliver the check to me. I gave him a couple of times. It seems that UPS will deliver whenever you're ready, go figure. I didn't know that.

To get the $3000 check, I'm supposed to go to Walgreens, CVS, Wal-mart, or 7-11 and get a $500 cash card and call him back. This was going to cover the "delivery fee." At Walgreens, this card is a "Green-Dot" cash card. You put money on it, and then you can use it like a credit card. I didn't know about these cards. So, this scam was educational.

He then gave me the 202-239-7526 number. I asked him a bunch of questions, made him repeat things, just mainly taking up his time, and he was a bit hard to understand, really. He wanted me to call him when I got the card, before I left my office on my way home. He was getting ansy and said his manager wanted him.

He called me back almost immediately and told me that his manager wanted to give me another number to call him at, because he may not be at the other number. The number he gave me was the 876-886-4927 (http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-876-886-4927), which is the number that showed up on the dialer-id. I think he made a grave mistake giving out the Washington, DC. number. I wish there was a way to report this number immediately to the FTC or somebody, so they can just go find these people.

Anyway, I asked him how I'm going to get the money to him. His story changed now and said that they were going to "wire" the money into my account, after I got the card. Kept assuring me that there is nothing to worry about. Heh heh. I asked him how am I going to get the $500 to him, and he just said to call for further instructions when I got the card.

I wish I could report this scam to some authority, but here it is.
