Got a call from Rick Brown badge number 220 saying he was from Legal Affairs Dept of US Treasury and that he was sending my paperwork to the local police to have me arrested for tax fraud or some other crap like that.  I said I'm well aware of the phone scam and he said, "I assure you, this is not a scam" telling me I have to call 202 241 0213 x115.  I've also been called by the ever-popular Julie Smith.  I just bought a little air-horn in a can and can't wait until I see that phone number show up on my caller i.d. again!

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

Called claiming to represent IRS. Said they were taking enforcement action. I told them we had received no notice in the mail. They claimed to have sent twice. Smelled like a scam, so I hung up on them.

This is not a legitimate call from the IRS.

Please see the following press releases:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

Since this individual is impersonating the IRS you should also report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). You can send an email to [email protected] or file an online complaint by completing their "Online Form" located on their website, http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml

Please visit our "Report Phishing" website (http://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing) and click on "Complaint Assistant". This will allow you to file a complaint with the FTC and identify the complaint as an IRS complaint.

Alternatively you can file a complaint directly with the FTC by visiting http://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Whether you use the IRS link or file the complaint directly with the FTC, add "IRS Hostile Call" in the Comments section of the complaint.

Individuals who have been victimized by this scam and have provided one or more Green Dot MoneyPak numbers to the scammer should also notify Green Dot directly at 800-473-3636 to report the scam and open an investigation.

Mid-eastern accent requesting a return call regarding outstanding tax.  The number was 202-241-0213. When I returned the call the man mentioned - "the IRS, Homeland security and asked if I had legal counsel.  I told him I would not need legal counsel as I do not have outstanding taxes & would imagine I would have received notification through the mail.  He became very angry and told me that someone will show up at my door and take me away in handcuffs.  I ended the call, but have saved the original voice mail.
