IRS web site says:
If you get an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS:
•Ask for a call back number and an employee badge number.
•If you think you may owe taxes, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS employees can help you.
•If you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you do, call the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484 to report the incident.
•You should also report it to the Federal Trade Commission by using their “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Ditto as the previous post. Caller says there's a legal complaint, verifies name and home address correctly, and that they've been trying to contact you via email, mail and in-person with no success, also thus need to speak to his supervisor at once to avoid further fines and will transfer the call. I hung up during the call transfer.
I received a call from 202-241-6134 this morning. Since I have a relative in the District of Columbia who does realistic foreign accent impersonations, I laughed when the caller said he was from the IRS and was calling to tell me an illegal lawsuit had been brought against me. He asked why I was laughing. He kept saying he was the IRS and I kept laughing. After a while he was laughing too, but said to call him back at 202-241-6134 and ask for Don Alex. Instead I called other family members for advice, which is how I learned that scam phone numbers can be looked up on the Internet. Another thing, the caller could be from India or some other foreign country, even though the phone ID shows District of Columbia.
