Ignore them and block their calls. Do not return their calls do not talk to them. This is a total scam run out of India.
First off, collection agencies must comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal regulation.
A debt collector cannot threaten you with arrest.
Your wages cannot be garnished unless you are sued and the court orders garnishment as a way to collect the judgment against you.
Debt collectors cannot contact you at work if you tell them you are not allowed to receive calls there.
Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money.
Debt collectors have no power of arrest and you cannot be arrested for ordinary civil debt. Debt collectors cannot suspend your DL
Of course the scammers are located in India and are beyond the reach of US law and regularly ignore US laws.
These calls are not random. The callers are predatory. They know your financial information and some personal information. They go after women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community. It is important that you do not talk to them, if they sense any vulnerability on your part they might hammer you with even more calls.
File a complaint with the FBI on their Internet Crime webpage http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
