I got a call from phone number 202-506-9962 this morning demanding money to satisfy an alleged debt that I have with the IRS. The caller said that I would be arrested if I did not make a payment or pay in full $3000. She said that I presently have an active warrant for my arrest. The caller identified herself as Juley Smith. She also said I could pay by some type of voucher.. My brother said that she is a scammer.
Of course it is a scam. I never thought that my number would fall into the hands of one of these con artists. To make matters worse it seems like my whole family was a target. Every adult in this household has received this voice recorded message, which is really what set off alarm bells.
Got a voicemail claiming I owe taxes and need to call this number back immediately. It's a scam: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam
This a Pakistan based IRS scam (there are also India based ones). Do not fall for this. Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
The IRS does not initiate any legal action over the phone. Report it also to your local law enforcement agency. The scammers use magicjack (Ymax corporation) voice over IP lines. This is against this company's terms of use and can lead to termination of their contract. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact with Ymax. Ultimately this is a case for the FBI legal attache in Islamabad. If you are really annoyed call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction (and the NSA can finally be a force for good).
