I got the same call last night! Really pissed me off! This guy had a really forceful scam pitch, and was very convincing. But his thick accent, his inability to prove the IRS had contacted me previously, his continually emphasizing all the bad things that were going to happen to me, and the pressure to act NOW to get him money for an out of court settlement were obvious indicators of the scam. Although I detected his scam, older folks who don't have the tech savvy or experience to see through this scam are really vulnerable. It's shame. I wish I could get these jerkwads face to face.
I got a call from this guy claiming he is Officer David Morgan, asking that I or my attorney should call immediately, ignoring the call is not advised as he can only wish me luck etc...Have been too many unwanted robo calls, telemarketers etc. and registering in the Do Not Call registry of FCC doesn't seem to make any difference.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
