And yes, this started to sound like a scam 15 sec into the call.

Ditto. Received the same phone call from them. Was aware of this scam; second attempt at our phone number. Callers were a woman and a man, both with thick foreign accents (Nigerian or Caribbean) who could barely read their script in English. They freaked out when I asked them for their street address and office number, explaining that I would be in Washington DC the next day on business! They ended the call immediately after threatening me that I would soon be arrested by local law enforcement, the local sheriff. They were so poor at this game that it felt like something out of an SNL comedy bit.
The caller was from "IRS" and did know the street address of the IRS headquarters. When I told her I was a professional tax preparer who had already called the FTC once. I told her I was anxious to hear what she had to say and she hung up. I now have the call blocked. I agree, it was an amusing call.
I received a call this morning from a number that has been calling our house and not leaving a message, but today they did. The lady with an accent said, “Hi, I am calling from the Legal Affairs at the US Department of Treasury, that is the Internal Revenue Service. We have been trying to reach you about a very important issue for months and months. We have a legal affidavit concerning tax fraud in your name. The hotline to reach us concerning this matter is 202-657-6438. Don’t disregard this message. If for any reason you don’t want to call us directly, you should have your legal attorney call us for you. Delay in calling us back will result in a legal mess for you and we will be forced to contact the legal authorities…….”
Thank goodness for these posts or I would have been very confused and concerned, but I would not have called back, as I do not answer calls or return calls that say "unknown" on my caller ID.
