I received a call today from this number. He left a message that he is an officer Brian Robert that I should contact him immediately otherwise the consequenses will be bad for me. The call originated from DC. Last week I received the identical call originating from CA (916-222-7426) but this was a lady identified herself as Julia Roberts.
Of course I ignored both calls and blocked them on my phone. Must be some kind of scam.
I have the same problem. I had received the same two phone messages from two different places one from Sloughouse, CA 916-222-7426 and one from Washington DC 202-751-2479 threaten legal action if I do not call them back. I do not owe anyone money, so this is definitely a scam. Watch out for those phone calls & do not give out any personal information.
I've had THREE of these fools call me and leave messages!! I never answer my phone without looking at the ID window, and I'm like you guys--I don't owe anybody any money, so I've KEPT the messages so I can replay them as ENTERTAINMENT in the evenings when I sit next to my computer!!!! It's great sport, because these guys are horrible actors. : ) They all use the same script....
This is, of course, one of the Eastern European schemes. It is probably Lithuanian or Estonian: Here's how it goes. A message is left, mostly on seniors phones, that: "Officer XXX of the IRS is calling and that you must call me back at my personal number immediately!" If you call back, you will get this [as it happened to my wife!]: "this is officer Eric Houston of the IRS how may I help you? -you answer- 'I'm sorry but that officer is busy at the moment let me see if I can pull up your case, and help. -you answer- "I need your SSN [not given], address and phone number [only phone given as they already have that from the call previous]. "Hold on please while I look at the file." "You owe the IRS [not the Department of the Treasury] over $10,000 in back taxes and penalties! You must pay immediately, or we will have the local police come and arrest you!'
- you of course are trying to explain all the while, to no avail - "The police will there in 30 minutes unless you give me your SSN and a secure form of payment for a down payment for the amount owed!" AT THIS POINT HANG UP !!!! Then call the FBI, and give them this, or any other number that is being used! Next, go to the IRS web site at IRS.gov, go to the fraud page, and put in what happened so they can do with it what they will. For Heaven Sake, do not give them any other information that they can use! And do not give them any kind of payment!
