I never answered the call, but they called twice in a row. My mother was called by the same number, which leads me to believe that he/she may have gotten our numbers through Verizon.
I rec'd a call on my cell phone from 202-779-8965. The live person read a script basically saying that they were calling from the "Federal Government Grants Dept." and that I had been "randomly selected to receive a $9,000 grant". I was asked what I would use the money for. I said I didn't know. Then, I was asked for a bank account or credit or debit card number in order to electronically receive the money within 45 minutes. From the beginning, I thought it was a scam, but was interested to see how it played out -- what exactly were they after. At the point electronic transmission was mentioned I got it. Of course, I did not give out any information. When I told the caller that I did not have either a bank account, debit, or credit card, I was told that I would have to "marry the caller" in order to get the money! I had them repeat this again as I am hard of hearing. Sure enough, that's what was said, and at that point, the called became amorous and flattering, and I hung up. This was obviously a scam!
