There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Actually, what they say is that they are calling from Internal Revenue Services - NOT Service, but Services. And, as noted below, IRS never (and legally cannot) initiate an action against a taxpayer via telephone.
I just received a voicemail saying it was the IRS with the callback number 202-793-8675. The display showed "Out of Area" 720-598-6574, not an IRS number. Thanks for the info, Slim. :)
Got the same call. The caller ID said 654-226-5548 with the call back of 202-793-8675. The IRS will send certified letters or then file a lien. They never call and say they are going to sue us.
