A phone call, email or text message from a supposed debt collector is not legally sufficient evidence of debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) includes statements such as this:
Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. ["Written" means snailmailed - US Mail ... not emailed or texted]
Therefore, if that caller wants you to pay immediately, before you get the written validation notice via snailmail, or if the caller wants payment via Green Dot, MoneyGram, Western Union, prepaid gift card or other untraceable means, then the call is definitely not legitimate.
IF you wish to communicate with the supposed collector / creditor, visit the following page, for example "Action Letters" to snailmail:
http://www.consumerfinance.gov/blog/debtcollection/
If you KNOW you owe no money, or believe the call was from a fake debt collector, please take the time to read this:

The said same thing about my taking out a pay day loan and they had my last four of my social and told me a complaint was made and allegation of trying to fraud a check cashing co. They had an old email address and bank acct number from when I was in the army. That's where they messed up bc they said I took out loan in 2013 but I was out of the army w that account in 2007. So I said let me call you back. I called my attorney he said call them n tell them to mail your attorney the complaint. The guy then says you can resolve this by settling the case for 600 bucks. I said mail my lawyer the form he said ok well I you can settle in court bye hung up n did not want to take my lawyers infor. This is Terrible that they get away w this. I wonder how many gullible people gave money.
I received several calls from this number where they stated I had three payday loans out since 2013 and I owe about $2,176 dollars when I probed more they gave me names of places I have never heard of and said the loans were taken out in Miami, FL. I have never been to Miami let alone lived there - the information that they could verify was from Public files.
