Someone called from this phone number claiming to be U.S. Dept of Legal Defense of U.S. Treasury.
When called back and told that I was the attorney for the person called, and they hung up.
Sounds fraudulent.
I just got a call from this number too. They told me to call the number right back. Also identified themselves as representing the U.S. Dept of Legal Defense of the U.S. Treasury tell me that a legal action has been started against me. When I asked what sort of legal action, they told me to call this number back immediately after hanging up. The number happens to be the same number that showed up on my caller ID. I could not understand a word the first guy was saying and then he handed me off to a woman "Karen Daniels" and I could barely understand her either. Both of them had heavy Indian accents.
There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.
