Jamaican Lottery / western union scam
List- Building call.
They aggregate working phone numbrrs and sell them for the scammers to call and "Teev ya" (thieve from you - steal)
In Jamaica they have a public campaign: STOP DA TEEVIN - STOP DA SCAMMIN'
These calls "appear" (spoof) to come from a DC number or a local number, buy they are not. They are from anywhere BUT what caller ID shows.
If you answrr and say hello hello. ..all you are doing is VERIFYING that a) it's a live number, anf B) you can be gullible enough to answer a call that you don't recognize the # and keep on talking.
These people call, different ones of them, and when they get answering machine, they keep saying "Hello" Hello"...trying to bait someone into answering. Not going to happen. Just need to block them.
Found this number and 202-795-1919 on my home phone's Caller ID yesterday. Since 202 is the area code for Washington, DC, could they be political fundraisers?
