I started getting calls from this number about a week ago. They called at least 2 or 3 times a day, and when you answer, there is nobody there. I called the number back, and got an automated answer from some discount news subscription group. I listened long enough to find that they have a menu option to remove your number from their calling list, so that's what I did.
However, since this phone number isn't listed on the Birmingham News's web site, there's a good chance it's a fake number, used by a scammer to try to get people to give their credit card numbers allegedly for a subscription.
Calling an unknown number back is not good. You never know where you're calling, unless you have verified the number in advance. Go to the Birmingham News web site: you'll see their valid numbers.
Calling an unknown number can and will get your number tagged as "live," a valuable commodity to a scammer. Even though you reached a menu offering to remove your number, there's a good chance it did just the opposite.
Don't answer unknown numbers. Don't press anything from a so-called automated menu belonging to a stranger. Never call unknown numbers.
